Volunteer

The Rochester Human Rights Initiative is always looking for new volunteers to help out our growing operation! Our clinic cannot operate without the generosity of volunteer healthcare professionals and students from the community. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our team at clinic@rochesterhumanrightsinitiative.org

Prospective Volunteers

Physicians, Psychologists, APPs

We are actively seeking medical professionals from all specialties who are interested in joining the RHRI's team of evaluators. The RHRI will ensure evaluators are adequately prepared to conduct evaluations through comprehensive training modules and constant support from our experienced team. The time commitment for an evaluator is flexible and can vary from one or two evaluations per year to multiple evaluations per month, depending on the evaluator's preference and availability. Evaluations can be conducted at any time of the day, usually on weekdays. Most of our evaluations take place at Strong Memorial Hospital or virtually. To volunteer, contact us at clinic@rochesterhumanrightsinitiative.org

Medical Students

We are always looking for dedicated medical who are interested in volunteering with RHRI. In order to become a volunteer, students must first attend a PHR-affiliated training session. Once trained, students work closely with clinicians and a team of other students to evaluate asylum seekers for signs of physical and/or psychological torture. Subsequently, students draft medical affidavits in support of the asylum applicant. A final version of the affidavit is then submitted by the clinician as part of the application that goes to court.
